Getting Started
Do I need to book, or can I just drop into the showroom?
Our showroom is by appointment, so we can give you our full attention and have the right person on hand. It only takes a moment to arrange — request a time and we'll call to confirm. That way your visit is genuinely useful rather than a quick look around.
Is the design consultation really free?
Yes. Your first design consultation is free and no-obligation. It's a chance to talk through what you're planning, see the quality up close, and get honest advice — whether or not you go ahead with us.
Do you design and build the kitchens?
We do both, under one roof. Callan designs and builds, and our kitchens are manufactured here in Auckland at our own workshop. It's the difference that matters most: what we draw is what we can actually build, so there are no nasty surprises between the design and the finished kitchen.
What does the process look like, start to finish?
Roughly: a free consultation to understand your project → design and a detailed quote → you sign off on the final design → we manufacture → we install. We keep you informed at each stage. See timeframes below.
Do you visit on-site, or is it all done in the showroom?
Both. A lot happens in the showroom, but for renovations we'll usually come to you and measure up on-site — it's the only way to design something that fits your space exactly, allows for the quirks of an existing home, and avoids surprises on installation day. Site visits are a normal part of how we work.
Pricing & Budget
How much does a new kitchen cost?
Every kitchen is custom, so the honest answer is "it depends" — but as a budgeting guide, our cabinetry (supplied and installed, excluding benchtops and appliances) typically falls into three tiers:
- Standard custom: $20k–$35k
- Premium: $35k–$50k
- Bespoke / high-end: $50k–$70k+
These are indicative ranges to help you budget, not a quote. The only way to get a real number is a design consultation.
What's included in that price — and what's not?
The ranges above are for cabinetry, supplied and installed. They exclude benchtops, appliances, splashbacks, plumbing, electrical, and any flooring, painting or building work. We'll always set out clearly what's in and out of your quote so you can budget for the whole project, not just the cabinets.
What makes a kitchen cost more or less?
The biggest factors are the size of the kitchen (metres of cabinetry), the number of drawers versus cupboards (drawers cost more but are far more practical), internal storage accessories (pull-outs, bins, corner and spice systems), the cabinet finish and door style, benchtop material, appliance integration and lighting. Site complexity matters too — older homes, uneven walls or floors, difficult access, and any plumbing or electrical changes.
Can I just replace the doors instead of the whole kitchen?
Often, yes. If your existing cabinets are in good condition, a doors-and-fronts refresh can transform a kitchen for roughly $2k–$10k+ depending on size and finish. It's a great option when the bones are sound but the look is tired — ask us and we'll tell you honestly whether it's worth it in your case.
How much does it cost to remove and dispose of my old kitchen?
As a ballpark, around $2,000 for removal and disposal of an average kitchen — usually about a day, depending on size and whether any demolition is involved.
Timeframes
How long does a kitchen take?
As a rough guide: design through to final sign-off takes about 4–6 weeks, and manufacture and installation to completion generally 2–3 months, depending on the scope and how site-ready things are. We'll give you a realistic timeline for your specific project up front.
Design & Quality
Why does it matter that you build what you design?
Because a kitchen that looks great on paper isn't always one that can be built or lived in. We've seen designs from people who'd never built a kitchen — drawer fronts that couldn't open because the handles clashed, appliances without enough clearance, panels specified at impossible sizes. It all has to be redesigned before it can be made, which costs time and money. Good design balances how a kitchen looks with how it's actually built and used.
What's the smallest kitchen you'll do?
There's no real minimum. We've built excellent kitchens in apartments and compact homes — good design matters far more than floor area.
What door styles do you offer?
A full range, roughly from entry level to highest end: flat panel / melamine, shaker, polyurethane routed profiles, and inset, solid timber and veneers at the top end. We'll help you match the style to your home and budget.
What hardware do you use?
We recommend and fit Blum — the world's leading cabinet hardware brand — and we use other great products too where they're the right fit. Blum actually chose our showroom to display their products, which we're quietly proud of.
How long will my kitchen last?
With good care, a long time. Moisture-resistant melamine is realistically 15–25 years; polyurethane generally lasts longer again; and solid timber has the longest life of all because it can be repaired and refinished. Where kitchens fail early is cheap particleboard with poor edge sealing — which is exactly what we don't use.
Benchtops
What benchtop options are there?
The main ones, in plain terms:
- Laminate — most affordable, huge colour range, easy to replace, less durable.
- Engineered stone / porcelain / sintered stone — durable, low-maintenance, premium appearance.
- Natural stone — beautiful and unique, but needs more care and sealing depending on the material.
- Solid timber — warm, can be refinished, needs regular maintenance.
- Stainless steel — incredibly durable, commercial look, scratches over time.
Which benchtop is most durable, needs sealing, or can take a hot pot?
These are the questions everyone asks, and the answer depends on the material. As a quick guide: engineered stone and porcelain are the most low-maintenance and don't need sealing; natural stone is stunning but usually needs sealing and care; laminate and timber don't love direct heat, so use a trivet. We'll walk you through what suits how you actually cook and live.
Other Rooms
Do you make more than kitchens?
Yes — as well as kitchens we design and build wardrobes, vanities and laundries, all to the same standard and finish.
Trust & Guarantees
Are you part of any industry body?

Yes — we're members of the NKBA(National Kitchen & Bathroom Association NZ), the premier trade organisation for design, manufacturing and supply professionals.
Do you guarantee your work?
Yes. We back our own cabinetry with a 10-year guarantee on the way it's built. On top of that, the quality products we use carry their own warranties, which we pass straight on to you — Blum hardware, for example, has a lifetime warranty, and benchtop materials come with both the manufacturer's and the stone fabricator's warranties. It's a big part of why we use quality products in the first place: the suppliers stand behind them, so you're covered for the long run.
Still have a question?
The best answers come from seeing the quality in person. Book a free design consultation and we'll call to confirm a time that suits — or call us on 09 930 6322.
